New Order from Old: The Rise of Second-Order Cybernetics and Implications for Machine Intelligence
The following manuscript holds an overview of cybernetics from a personal perspective, including detailed sections on:
- differences between the worldviews of cybernetics and artificial intelligence
- contrasts between input/output systems and the "through-looping" of cognitive systems
- entailment meshes as a knowledge representation scheme
- the architecture of conversations.
It was written based on the content of a presentation given at a conference of the American Society for Cybernetics in Vancouver, BC, Canada in 1988.
It intended for an audience with some familiarity of cybernetic concepts.
